How to Heal and Help Your Hair

No one is immune from having a bad hair day, and with time I’ve come to realize that the health and longevity of my hair often reflects my own mental stability and how organized/disorganized my life is. Bedhead and split ends are one thing, but as work and life stress increases, I’ve caught myself developing thinner hair, a common sign that maybe I’m more stressed than I let on.

And here’s a scary truth we often forget – the quality and health of your hair is not forever, and if you’re not paying attention to the way you take care of it the same way you care for your body, well-being, etc. it’ll catch up to you.

So I’ve compiled a list of products that have helped my long, dry, and thin hair in an effort to stir more conversation on one of the most defining features we have:

Briogeo Shampoo + Conditioner

Like skincare, the basics to healthy hair is starting from the way you maintain and take care of it. Like skin, the roots of your hair can very easily tell you if the condition of your scalp needs help, or maybe just some toning up here and there.

I was guilty of using those giant, bulk bottles of Pantene you can get at Costco for well over 5+ years, but what I’ve come to realize is that your hair needs as much nourishment as you do for your body.

Briogeo, (a brand my mom introduced to me, much like the products on this list), has various products that help from dryness, volume, and scalp treatment for anyone who may have product buildup from the past.

One of the best-selling items in Sephora and also available online, I definitely recommend this brand, which has been featured in Allure and various other magazines for its products, as a good start for revamping your daily hair care routine. Take their hair quiz and find out which products to start with today!

Aveda Invanti Advanced

Something I don’t talk about often is the thinness of my hair, and how my mental health has effected the way my hair grows and feels even today. For the past few years, I’ve noticed the gradual thinning of my hair and from worrying about hormones to female pattern balding, I’ve come to understand that the main reason why I have hair loss is when I’m stressed, or using the wrong products.

This product is definitely a more expensive, long-term investment for anyone who may be in the same boat, and wants to do something about it. I often alternate between this three-pack step routine (shampoo, conditioner, and scalp revitalizing serum) and using my non-treatment Briogeo Shampoo+Conditioner, and I definitely have seen a difference.

I have less hair fall out and can feel it slowly regain strength as I’ve slowly incorporated more healthy products into my routine. Taking this dive and making the investment in this line has made a tremendous difference, and is something I will continue.

For a cheaper alternative, Pura D’or Hair Thinning Therapy Shampoo is a definitely must-try for your list and I’m hoping to test this product out myself.

Innisfree Hair Serum

Beyond just washing your hair what you do after is equally just as important, and this goes for both men and women.

Your hair is at its most vulnerable when it’s wet, (which is why many people say you shouldn’t comb your hair right out of the shower due to breakage), but it’s also when it’s most capable of absorbing nutrients.

Utilizing hair oils + serums is a simple step in a routine that can impact your hair significantly. Personally, I use Innisfree’s moisturizing oil serum meant specifically for dry hair. Not only does it smell amazing, but the nights I use this I can feel my hair feel significantly softer the morning after.

Shiseido Hair Conditioner Mask

This is something my mom hyped up and at first my brother and I made fun of her for looking like an alien in our living room, but she has the most luscious hair out of all of us.

If you haven’t heard of Shiseido, google them real quick and take a moment to browse their amazing skincare line and you’ll understand why they’re one of the most trusted beauty brands in Asia.

More recently, I’ve been introduced to their line of hair conditioning masks that you slater on in between your shampoo and conditioner. If you want to take it to the next level like my mom got me on, purchase an at home electric thermal cap to really let the product soak in.

This is something I do whenever I’m trying to sit around watching Netflix with a face mask on, and it’s a great way to feel refreshed at your own homemade spa.

Give it some time

Like working out or eating healthy, seeing results won’t happen overnight. The combination of the products above over the course of roughly 2-3 months was when I first began seeing a major difference in how much of my scalp I could see when I got out of the shower, and a lesser amount of hair loss with each wash.

Of course, each person’s hair type is different and will react differently, so I challenge you to take the first steps in investing in research and trial and error to find the products that will best fit you.
